The recognition of the importance of promoting sustainability in the sports sector, particularly in football, keeps growing year by year. In this regard, LIFE TACKLE and the European Stadium & Safety Management Association (ESSMA) have recently joined forces to expand the knowledge of sustainability throughout European and non-European football stadiums. The partnership was established through the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ESSMA and the Institute of Management of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, a public University based in Pisa (Italy), lead partner of the LIFE TACKLE project.

ESSMA, the European Stadium & Safety Management Association unites the stadium industry. With more than 350 members from numerous leagues and federations, ESSMA represents a strong network in Europe to discuss sector related topics and reach common insights. Because of the high involvement with key stakeholders in the industry, ESSMA contributes towards the further professionalisation of the European stadium industry.

As declared by Cyril De Greve, ESSMA Managing Director, “the recognition of the importance of sustainability is growing globally, as in the case of stadiums. More and more stadiums are taking steps to enhance their eco-friendliness. As a sector federation we want to bring relevant content on this subject as an inspiration for improvement. We believe that this partnership is key to achieving this goal.”

The partnership will involve different activities related to sustainability knowledge sharing, promotion and dissemination. One of the activities involves the distribution of surveys by ESSMA to its members in order to collect environmental management practices adopted by football organisations. These will be combined with the best practices of LIFE TACKLE to generate more practical sustainability guidelines for the stadium industry.

“We are proud to have ESSMA on board” declared Tiberio Daddi, project manager of LIFE TACKLE, “this win-win partnership will support the growth of the focus on sustainability within ESSMA and offer LIFE TACKLE a great opportunity to increase its impact by involving the ESSMA members and networks”.
